2005 Oscar Nominations
2005 OSCAR NOMINATIONS ARE PREDICTABLY BORING - SO HERE ARE MY EARLY PREDICTIONS
What happened this year? The Golden Globes went by the books, except for a few Television catagories. Even when there might have been a surprise, it was a predicted surprise, such as Terrance Howard's best actor nom for "Hustle & Flow." I actually like Howard -- quite a lot, honestly, even since early roles in things like "Dead Presidents" -- and I wish this year wasn't so predictable so that the nomination might actually mean something, because it's again going to Philip Seymour Hoffman. I wish I would just get to the theater and see "Capote" already. Paul Haggis gets nominated for directing "Crash?" Strange, but not unforseen. He stole Peter Jackson or Woody Allen's spot. It's a tough pick here, as I think Clooney will get recognized, but I don't think "Brokeback Mountain" will be completely ignored, so perhaps Ang Lee. I still refuse to believe that "Crash" is an award worthy masterpiece, but my early prediction is that it will win best picture. The Globes purposefully snubbed it with the hinting towards the Oscars giving it the recognition. There is no competition to Reese Witherspoon, except for that outside chance that Felicity Huffman will sneak up and steal some votes away. As for support, I pick Giamatti to finally take home a statue for this first time nomination. He has so deserved nominations in the past, and I'm glad they've stopped snubbing him, and I think he'll take it all the way. I'm also really glad that "A History of Violence" gave showcase to William Hurt, although I liked Ed Harris much better myself. And my best supporting actress vote goes to Amy Adams for "Junebug," but I think Michelle Williams will take the trophy. Then again, I was shocked at Rachel Weisz getting the globe -- and I even picked her to win it!
What about the other catagories? Don't care too much, really. "Wallace and Gromit" should take the animation trophy. "9" is an awesome animated short. Documentary goes to "Murderball." Editing to "Cinderella Man." And I'll figure the rest later. Who got snubbed, who got unjustly noticed? Lemme know your thoughts.
