STAY GOLD, PONYBOY
And the nominees are...fucking strange. Usually the Golden Globes tend to be a precursor to what could possibly be awarded come Oscar time. This is NOT a precursor to the Oscars. My early picks...and no pictures, because I'm too lazy right now.
MOVIES
Best Picture - Drama:
Babel
Bobby
The Departed
Little Children
The Queen
Babel and Bobby both baffle me. That's a lot of b words, bitch! Both of those have had absolutely mixed reviews across the board, and I'm not exactly sure how these ended up in the mix. Don't expect Bobby to show up at the Academy race, and I'm gonna give Babel a shot to see how the fuck a Brad Pitt movie ended up a Globe nominee. Hey, did you know that you can be a member of the awards screening community? Yeah, all you need is the internet! As for the rest, I'm certain I'll be bored by The Queen, The Departed was quite good (although unnecessary, as most remakes), and I'm watching Little Children today or tomorrow. Where's United 93? Volver? Pan's Labyrinth? The Da Vinci Code? That one was a joke. Anyway, it'll be Babel, and I'll hate it.
Best Picture - Musical or Comedy:
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
The Devil Wears Prada
Dreamgirls
Little Miss Sunshine
Thank You for Smoking
I was afraid that this catagory would be too jumbled, and it is. In a perfect world, this would end up going to Thank You For Smoking, which truely surprised me by being better the second viewing. I'm convinced Little Miss Sunshine will take it. Though don't count out that crazy Kazekch. It's outlandish to actually think of Borat as an award winner, but stranger things have happened. For instance -- they're making a sequel to Walking Tall, this time starring Kevin Sorbo.
Best Actress - Drama:
Penelope Cruz in Volver
Judi Dench in Notes on a Scandal
Maggie Gyllenhaal in Sherrybaby
Helen Mirren in The Queen
Kate Winslet in Little Children
Judi Dench? I've barely even heard of that movie! Helen's a lock on this one. Also notice how funny it is to read "Kate Winslet in Little Children" if you forget the context.
Best Actor - Drama:
Leonardo DiCaprio in Blood Diamond
Leonardo DiCaprio in The Departed
Peter O'Toole in Venus
Will Smith in The Pursuit of Happyness
Forest Whitaker in The Last King of Scotland
Ha. HAHAHAHAHA! Blood Diamond? Leo was the reason I DIDN'T want to see that movie! Maybe the trailers just used bad clips of his accent. And he's up against himself in The Departed, which he's very deserving of. I'm sure Forest is gonna take this one, but Peter O'Toole is gonna die soon, so he may have this on the "old man" principle.
Best Actress - Musical or Comedy:
Annette Bening in Running With Scissors
Toni Collette in Little Miss Sunshine
Beyonce Knowles in Dreamgirls
Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada
Renee Zellweger in Miss Potter
Beyonce? Did they see the fucking movie? Absurd, and only further proof of those award pushing lines in her contract that have been whispered about. Meryl Streep all the way, and I'll be really upset if it's not her.
Best Actor - Musical or Comedy:
Sacha Baron Cohen in Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Aaron Eckhart in Thank You for Smoking
Chiwetel Ejiofor in Kinky Boots
Will Ferrell in Stranger than Fiction
Johnny Depp getting the nod FOR THE SAME EXACT CHARACTER HE PLAYED IN THE FIRST PIRATES is a fucking joke. The bigger joke? Is Pirates a Musical or a Comedy? I forget. And as much as I love Chiwetel, I couldn't wait to not watch Kinky Boots. Perfect world? Eckhart, hands down. This world? It's Sacha Baron Cohen.
Best Supporting Actress:
Adriana Barraza in Babel
Cate Blanchett in Notes on a Scandal
Emily Blunt in The Devil Wears Prada
Jennifer Hudson in Dreamgirls
Rinko Kikuchi in Babel
You know I'm gonna root for my Jennifer Hudson, and I see no reason why she won't win this. However, I fell in love with Emily Blunt in Prada, so I'm torn.
Best Supporting Actor:
Ben Affleck in Hollywoodland
Eddie Murphy in Dreamgirls
Jack Nicholson in The Departed
Brad Pitt in Babel
Mark Wahlberg in The Departed
Affleck's said to be great in Hollywoodland, but no way will he win this. Wahlberg's a nice nod, but there's no chance. Brad Pitt is Brad Pitt. It comes down to Jack or Eddie. I loved Eddie in Dreamgirls, and it's a real crowd pleasing role for people who remember him way back when. I thought Jack was way too hammy in The Departed. He's almost got this locked, though, outside of that Eddie upset.
Director:
Clint Eastwood for Flags of Our Fathers
Clint Eastwood for Letters from Iwo Jima
Steven Frears for The Queen
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for Babel
Martin Scorsese for The Departed
Clint's already got a few, give one to Marty.
Screenplay:
Guillermo Arriaga for Babel
Todd Field and Tom Perrotta for Little Children
Patrick Marber for Notes on a Scandal
William Monahan for The Departed
Peter Morgan for The Queen
No real idea on this one. The scripting awards don't often reward the script so much as the movie itself (remember, Lost In Translation won a best scripting award), though I think Monahan did a fine job reworking Infernal Affairs, and I've heard awesomeness about Little Children. I'm sure they'll give it to Peter Morgan, especially because I've heard the script takes a backseat to the performances and is wholly unremarkable.
Foreign Language:
Apocalypto, USA
Letters from Iwo Jima, USA/Japan
The Lives of Others, Germany
Pan's Labyrinth, Mexico
Volver, Spain
Apocalypto! Wow! That was a shocker! TWO American productions in a foreign language catagory is a bit a shot to the nuts, isn't it? I've not been able to see any of these besides Apocalypto thus far, but I've heard Pan's and Volver are magnificent. You know the critics and awards groups have a major hard on for Pedro, so Volver takes it.
Animated Film:
Cars
Happy Feet
Monster House
Guess which catagory doesn't matter this year. Go on, guess! Three mediocre efforts, and Pixar should usually be a lock...though Happy Feet is a gargantuan hit.
Original Score:
Alexandre Desplat for The Painted Veil
Clint Mansell for The Fountain
Gustavo Santaolalla for Babel
Carlo Siliotto for Nomad
Hans Zimmer for The Da Vinci Code
Who knows. Of all catagories, I can never get this. I put my money on The Fountain though, because if anything besides the look of the film was impressive, it was the music.
Original Song:
"A Father's Way" from The Pursuit of Happyness
"Listen" from Dreamgirls
"Never Gonna Break My Faith" from Bobby
"The Song of the Heart" from Happy Feet
"Try Not to Remember" from Home of the Brave
"Listen" is the only one I've heard, and the only one I need to hear. Beyonce killed that song.
TV
Best Series - Drama:
24
Big Love
Grey's Anatomy
Heroes
Lost
I guess it's safe to say that this is tough. Heroes is very entertaining, and I'm still on board with Lost. I'm thinking repeat from last year, give it to 24.
Best Actress - Drama:
Patricia Arquette in Medium
Edie Falco in The Sopranos
Evangeline Lilly in Lost
Ellen Pompeo in Grey's Anatomy
Kyra Sedgwick in The Closer
Ha! Edie's won so many times, so maybe Patricia. I swear if they even consider giving an award to Ellen Pompeo, the least likable lead character on any show (possibly of all time), I'll shoot somebody.
Best Actor - Drama:
Patrick Dempsey in Grey's Anatomy
Michael C. Hall in Dexter
Hugh Laurie in House
Bill Paxton in Big Love
Kiefer Sutherland in 24
MCDREAMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MCCREAMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Michael C. Hall deserves it. Kiefer or Hugh wins it.
Best Series - Musical or Comedy:
Desperate Housewives
Entourage
The Office
Ugly Betty
Weeds
THE OFFICE! Ugly Betty's a close second. Shh, it's fabulous.
Best Actress - Musical or Comedy:
Marcia Cross in Desperate Housewives
America Ferrera in Ugly Betty
Felicity Huffman in Desperate Housewives
Julia Louis-Dreyfus in The New Adventures of Old Christine
Mary-Louise Parker in Weeds
Julia Louis-Dreyfus or Mary-Louise Parker! It's the battle of the hyphenated names! It's nice to see that the Housewives are backing off a little bit and letting fresh, talented blood like America Ferrera in there.
Best Actor - Musical or Comedy:
Alec Baldwin in 30 Rock
Zach Braff in Scrubs
Steve Carrell in The Office
Jason Lee in My Name is Earl
Tony Shalhoub in Monk
Go Alec Baldwin! I hope he gets it, but leave some room for Steve Carrell.
Best Miniseries or movie:
Bleak House
Broken Trail
Elizabeth I
Mrs. Harris
Prime Suspect: The Final Act
Is it going to be Helen Mirren...or Helen Mirren? You decide.
Best Actress - Miniseries or Movie:
Gillian Anderson in Bleak House
Annette Bening in Mrs. Harris
Helen Mirren in Elizabeth I
Helen Mirren in Prime Suspect: The Final Act
Sophie Okonedo in Tsunami: The Aftermath
Again...it is going to be Helen Mirren...or Helen Mirren??? WHICH ONE???
Best Actor - Miniseries or Movie:
Andre Braugher in Thief
Robert Duvall in Broken Trail
Michael Ealy in Sleeper Cell: American Terror
Chiwetel Ejiofor in Tsunami: The Aftermath
Ben Kingsley in Mrs. Harris
Bill Nighy in Gideon's Daughter
Matthew Perry in The Ron Clark Story
Andre Braugher was incredible in Thief, and it shouldn't be anyone else.
Best Supporting Actress - Series, Miniseries or Movie:
Emily Blunt in Gideon's Daughter
Toni Collette in Tsunami: The Aftermath
Katherine Heigl in Grey's Anatomy
Sarah Paulson in Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip
Elizabeth Perkins in Weeds
God, they sure lump everything together in the Globes, don't they? Elizabeth Perkins rocks on Weeds.
Best Supporting Actor - Series, Miniseries or Movie:
Thomas Haden Church in Broken Trail
Jeremy Irons in Elizabeth I
Justin Kirk in Weeds
Masi Oka in Heroes
Jeremy Piven in Entourage
One more for Piven? Or give it to the scene stealer, Masi Oka? Decisions...
January 17th decides it.
