DARE-AOKE

Shakes The Clown (1991, dir. Bob Goldthwait, US)

"As soon as that camera’s off, he’s gonna fuck that little dog."

What a line, and it’s perfectly delivered! Sadly, that’s the only thing that really made me laugh in this, Bobcat Goldthwait’s masterpiece. He wrote, directed, stars, and produced this total piece of shit. The main problem with it is that nothing feels at all complete. This is like someone’s rough draft that they decided to shoot. I’ve seen SCRIPTLESS movies that Hollywood has made with severely better results. It doesn’t flow at all, it just kinda hops from scene to scene watching Bobcat with a young Adam Sandler get into trouble, get wasted, crash cars, etc. Bad clowns. I’m not one of these people who for no apparent reason hates clowns. I’ve never gotten that fear. At what point did someone develop a hatred for entertainers in make up? Was it that horrible Stephen King adaptation of It? Go back, watch it again. It’s fucking AWFUL. There ain’t a thing scary about that. Nor is there anything scary here, except mediocrity. There’s nothing completely terrible about this movie, and that’s another problem, because I can’t fully hate it. It simply exists in my brain, and will likely be pushed out of memory by week’s end. That little dog line won’t, though.
